Completed Projects and Activities since year 2004

 

 

Year 2010

 

  • Vesak Card Project

  

As the first project undertaken by the OGA we are happy to say that we were able to sell over 5000 Vesak cards by breaking any records so far. Art work of the Vesak cards were provided by three school children in Grade 11.( Sudharika Dhananji – 11 Namal, Amandi Chandula , 11 Nelum and Amaya Nanayakkara, 11 Namal ) and the poem was written by Ms. Ranjana Perera, an Old girl of the school.

 

 

  • Vesak Bakthi Geeetha

 

Around 70 Old Girls participated in the Bakthi Geetha Program Which was held on 1st June 2010 at the School Premises. It was a spectacular event joined with the school Budhhist society and the OGA Group was trained by Ms. Sonia Rathnayake who is an Old girl of the school. This event was shown in ITN.

 

  • Ranaviru Upahara

 

The School Buddhist Society Organized the “Ranaviru Upahara” , where the School Children donated artificial legs for those who were wounded in the war. The OGA came forward to provide gifts for the soldiers and refreshments for all the participants of the event.

 

  • Band Show ( Nada Ama )

 

 

The Old girls association with the Musical Department of the school organized a Band Show titled “Nãda Ama” at the Kularathne Hall ( Ananda College ) on 06th August 2010 to raise funds towards buying Equipments to the School Orchestra. It was a long felt need for proper equipment to train the school Orchestra and Mrs. Mano Malawaraarachchi ( Music Teacher ) came up with the idea of having this Band Show to raise funds to fulfill the above need. The OGA stepped forward to help the Music Department to organize this event and provided all the assistance to conduct the event successfully.

The Band show was organized to reflect and maintain the dignity and status of the school and was be an event to remember as a melodious event full of original creations by the School eastern and western bands and also other leading schools in Colombo, such as Visaka Vidyalaya, D S Senanayake Vidyalaya and Nalanda College.

The fund raised by the event was given to the music department of the school to buy the necessary equipment for the Orchestra.

 

  • Children’s Day

 

Donation of a new School Bus

The OGA was able to buy a 29 seater Bus for the School by the funds raised from the OGA committees from 2004 to 2010. The OGA committees have been carefully raising funds to buy this bus for the school as it has been a long felt need for the school Children. The bus was handed over to the School children on 01st of October by the 2010 OGA Secretary during the World Children’s day celebration. We would like to thank Ms. Inesha Perera ( Japan ), Ms. Samanthika Perera, Dr. Priyantha Perera , Mr. Kaluarachchi and Mr. Madihewa for the support given in aquiring the bus for the school.

 

Drama Competition

The School Organized a Drama Competition to celebrate the World Children’s’ day and the OGA provide the total organization of the event by providing Certificates, awards and refreshments for the judges and the participants.

 

  • Dinner Dance


Old Girls Association spearheaded a fund raising project towards the completion of a fully equipped Library Complex which is a felt need for many years. We organized a Dinner Dance titled “Pink & Blue” at Waters Edge on November 04th 2010 to raise funds towards the completion of the Library Complex.  This was the maiden Dinner Dance held in the school history and was a great success.

This was enjoyed by 500 past pupils, teachers, parents and friends.   There were many prizes won by the participants such as Air tickets, Hotel packages and gift packs and vouchers by leading companies in the country.  There were many competitions such as ticket draw, souvenir draw, and the business card draw and many contests for the participants such as Queen of the night, , best Dancer ( Individual / Couple ) etc…   Music was provided by non other than “Gypsies” and was a major attraction of the event. 

This event was highly commended by the participants and was a major attraction in the media.   The main sponsors were the MAX TV and Lakbima news paper and was also supported by National lotteries board, Natures Secrets, Unilever, ESP Enterprises, Swedeshi, Manchee, Triump International, Great wall, Hameedias for Gift Items.  And also the Members of the OGA gave their fullest support to make this event the most memorable event in 2010. 

 

  • Raffle Draw


A Raffle Draw was organized by the Committee Member of 1989 Batch of the OGA to raise funds towards completion of the Library Complex.  This was a successful project worth Rs. 600000/- , which was drawn during the Dinner Dance and valuable prizes such as four hotel packages for four people in 5 star hotels were given out.  Also consolation prizes including electrical items, gift vouchers from Elephant house, and Triumph international were given to 20 lucky winners of the raffle Draw.

 

  • Medical camp


While raising funds for the Library Complex, the OGA also took initiative in providing valuable service for the School teachers.  As suggested by Madam Principal the OGA organized a Health camp on the 13th November 2010 at the school premises.  This was mainly for the school past and present teachers and the old girls.  This was a highly successful even including 11 different clinics.  (Cancer Screening, Eye , Dental, Osteoporosis, Lab testing, Aurveda, Beauty Therapy, Nutrition , Body Mass Index checking , counseling and general checkups ).  There were interesting Lectures and demonstrations conducted by several doctors on common medical issues.  ( Dr. Thilani Warusawithana ( Ayurweda – Pancha Karma , Dr. Kaumadhi Karunasena ( Panchakarma and Gynecology ), Dr. Namal Liyanage ( Counselling for teachers ) and also Ms. Champika Gunarathne ( Demostration of Beaty care ) and Dr. Nirosha Tharangani).  This event was supported by Nawaloka Hospitals, Vision Care, Anelene ( Fonterra Ltd ), National Cancer Hospital, Sri Lanka Ayurvedic Drugs Corporation (Mr. Somaweera Chandrasiri), Sri Lanka Dental Association, Eye Hospital, and Colombo Municipal Council.

 

  • Community Project


The OGA donated goods worth Rs. 300000, including a computer, sports items, toys and 300 gift packs for Katharagama, Gothami Gama Kanishta Vidyalaya, conducted by the School in association with the Carlton Suwaudana Health Camp ( organized by the office of the first Lady ).  The goods were provided by the Old girls and the School representatives and the OGA main committee handed over the items to the needy school during the health camp held at Kataragama.

 

  • Library Project

Construction of the Ground floor of the new Building

The OGA undertook this project which costs over 10 million rupees to fulfill a long felt need of the school. The main target of the OGA 2010 committee is to complete the Ground floor of the Library Building with furniture and shift the old library to the new building completely. This involves total constructions of the ground floor, tiling, fixing doors and windows, painting, furnishing and land scaping. The ground floor of the Building includes Main Library, Library for the Primary Classes, OGA room, Dental Surgery, and a sick room. All the funds raised from the current projects were utilized for the constructions and further funds are collected for finishing. This was the largest project undertaken by the OGA for the past decade and requires lot of funding and services of the Old Girls to complete the project successfully. This is supervised by the Education Department and conducted by the Library Committee.

 

Library Database and Book issuing system

The OGA undertook the task of automating the Library system. The OGA provided the Library with a new software to handle the storing and lending books and OGA members volunteered to for data entry which was a task of entering details of nearly 30000 books in the library. It is expected to run the new Library once it is shifted to the new building using this system. The system also provides facilities to keep track of member details, search for books and handle inventory and accounts.

 

 

  • Scholarship Project

Education

The OGA was successful in providing 33 scholarships for school children including two university students. After careful selection of students the OGA provides Rs. 12,000/ per year for those who are in need and also those who are doing well in their studies. This is done to help our younger sisters to conduct their studies and also to encourage them by financially assisting them. We aim to raise the number of scholarships to 50 this year.

Sports

With the aim of helping to uplift the sports in school, 16 Sirimavians were given Scholarships worth ( Rs. 5000/- ) for their achievements in the field of sports. Also Rs. 30,000/- was given to a current Sirimavian ( as a sponsorship for the air ticket ) who is the Number 3 Badminton player in the country.

 

 

  • Other Projects


Mug Project  - Conducted by the committee member of 91 Batch as a project to provide souvenir Mugs which resembles the school’s oldest building printed with the school name.

Uniform Project – Conducted by committee member of 87 batch to provide grade 1 and grade 2 students with school uniforms

Grade 1 – PT Kits/ Aprons -  The OGA provided PT Kits / Aprons and Wada Malla for the new Grade 1 students in 2011.

First Day Photograph – A project was conducted to take a souvenir photograph of the new grade 1 students on their first day at school. 

Book List -  Book Lists from Grade 1 to Grade 5 were prepared and was sold with the necessary book covers.  The books were printed with the school logo and the packages included the necessary accessories such as colour pencils and crayons.

 

The OGA also took responsibility in Renovating Principals Office, Creating the new Office for Principal, Maintaining the School main hall, and renovating the Primary toilets.  The OGA also maintains the School Orchid House.

Year 2007

 

  • Assistance was given for the Annual Pirith Ceremony of 2007.
  • Organizing “Sigithi Rangana” Concert performed by the Primary students of the school. Fund raising project for the college swimming pool.
  • Scholarship fund
  • Awarded 20 trophies to the school Inter House Sports Meet.
  • Community Services-Books, Stationary, Sports equipments, First Aid equipments were provided to the students of Thanthirimale Wimalagnana Maha Vidyalaya.
  • The school Conference Hall
  • Vesak Festival-Atapirikara was provided for the “Sil” campaign.
  • Teachers’ Day-The Teachers and staff were felicitated by treating them with breakfast.
  • World children’s Day-Inter house drama competition was organized
  • Medical Camp-With the Assistance of teachers and parents a Medical Camp was organized at the school premises.
  • Close Circuit Camera Project-
  • “Sound of Waves”-A Musical Show was a very successful event which was held at B.M.I.C.H as a fund raising project for the School Swimming pool. The Old Girls Association Donated Rs.2 Million to the swimming pool fund.
  • Assistance was given for the Annual Pirith Ceremony of 2008.

 

 

Year 2006

 

  

  • Building up a library to Gannaruwa Junior School considered being a disadvantaged school, and furnishing it with books and a computer.
  • Contribute to the supply of Electricity to Yahanegala Junior School and organizing a book exhibition
  • Organizing the New Year Fair in 2006 and contributed all the proceeds to the swimming pool project.
  • Organizing the Foundation laying ceremony of the swimming pool project.
  • Contributing to functions such as annual Pirith Ceremony, Annual School Sports Meet, Vesak Festival and World Teachers Day.
  • Holding Inter- house Drama contest to commemorate the World children’s Day and Granting presents to the winners.
  • Establishing the school bookshop which was a felt requirement.
  • Monthly grant of Rs.500/=for ten bright students from financially disadvantaged families was donated; from the scholarship fund of the association.

 

 

 

Year 2005

 

 

  • New Year fair 2005 project was launched with the view to put up a complete and up-to-date canteen for the school. The proceeds amounted to 1.5 Million Rupees and was utilized for the purpose of putting up the school canteen.
  • Launched a car wash project to provide financial assistance to students qualified to take part in Asian Games and Australian Net-ball tournament.
  • Ten needy bright students who required financial aid were selected on merit and a monthly grant of Rs.500/= was made. (Continuously done every year)
  • Organized a workshop conducted by well known writer Miss Janaki Sooriyarachchi on the occasion of Children’s Day 2005.
  • English Language Camp for students of Grade 1, 2 and 3 was financed by our association and ex. teachers representing our union provided necessary resource personal.
  • Our Objective in staging the musical fiesta show “Miyesi Rangana” was providing opportunities to our students to display their talents and laying the foundation for the renovation of the College Hall.
  • Paid tribute to teachers on the Worlds’ Teachers day. Presented certificates and presents to teachers who sacrificed their leave by abstaining from absence.

 

 

Year 2004

 

 

  • Provided drummers and dancing troupes for the procession on occasion of the annual Pirith ceremony; Supplied flowers, “Pirikara” and other items for the decorations of the occasion
  • Presented fifteen trophies for the annual inter-house athletics and sports meet.
  • Presented gift vouchers to the athletes who participated and represented the school at the Net-ball competition held in Australia and the 41st Jawaharlal Nehru Junior Hockey tournament held in New Delhi.
  • The first session of introducing the 5-S concept was held under the patronage of Mr Lal Fonseka. We also made arrangements for teachers parents and past students to visit St. Josephs Girls School Gampola which won the 5-S Productivity Trophy.
  • Renovated the main office room and fixed name boards etc in the school premises to enhance the beauty of the environment
  • Rendered our services for the Professional Development of teachers.
  • Sponsored one day work shop organized by the Junior section of the school and subsidized the payments to twelve teachers who participated in the teachers’ seminars to upgrade their professional aptitudes and skills.
  • Presented gift vouchers every term to teachers who showed progress in abstaining from taking leave and displayed monthly the names of the teachers who were regular in attendance. We also sent birth day greetings to teachers. (Continuously done every year)
  • Organized a farewell function on 2004-03-27 to honor and appreciate the services rendered by the retired Principal Miss Nanda de Silva and presented a publication to honor her services.
  • New Year fair to swell the funds of the association was held on 2004-03-24 and the proceeds were utilized to grant facilities such as educational and sports scholarships to less fortunate students, operating teachers development programs and the 5-S project.
  • A medical camp was held on 2004-08-08 with the cooperation of students teachers retired teachers past students and parents.
  • Organized annual Sirimavians Walk on 2004.10.09 with a view to fund the renovation of the College Hall and the Library.
  • We gave our fullest cooperation to make the musical fiesta “Arumesi Gee Sara” successful.
  • Donation of Rs.182700/= to purchase a Multi-Media Projector which was a felt urgent need of the school.
  • A welfare project was sponsored on 2004-11-10 for the upliftment of pupils teachers and parents of the Diyabeduma Katukeliyawa Vidyalaya Polonnaruwa.
